| Steve Powers was born and studied art in Philadelphia, which is said –against popular belief– to be the real birth place of graffiti, and resides since the 90s in New York. His deep roots come from graffiti, but that is just one side of this amazing pop artist whose work has travelled around the world and graced walls from high brow galleries to amusement parks (he was a part of the Dreamland Project, where many great artists were asked to redesign all the signs of the classic Coney Island park) and counts between his fans with people like David Byrne. Steve Powers´ art –heavily influenced by the hand made lettering, crushing everyday phillosophy and existentialism, to name a few– has taken the American artist to show at the 49th Venice Bienalle, Deitch Gallery in New York, Parco Gallery in Tokyo, Yerba Buena Art Center in San Francisco or the Alleged Annex in Los Angeles, among others. |
Powers counts with different monographies about his body of work, and is also the author of one of the contemporary bibles of graffiti, The Art of Getting Over. This year he has earned the prestigious Fullbright grant, which will lead him to develope a great project in Ireland, focused on bringing some light in depressed areas through his art in interaction with the community. |
