Gerhard Stochl
Skateboarders 1996 - 2006
June 30 until August 31, 2006
Miami, Sao Paulo, Vienna and New York City are only a few of the stops on Gerhard Stochl’s journey through the world of skateboarding. His job as a photographer for top skateboarding magazines in the United States and Europe has offered him the opportunity to document the sport’s cultural spread across the globe. Born in Vienna, he now resides in Manhattan, where he shoots for magazines like i-D and Dazed & Confused and does commercial work for Nike, DC Shoes, Carhartt Europe and Zoo York.
Stochl’s show at Circleculture Gallery presents a composition of 40 works in black and white as well as color, taken on three continents over the last decade.
The artist’s work emphasizes the special relationship between skateboarders and their urban surroundings. Stochl’s skill lies in combining landscape, architecture and tricks to present a complete work of art. In doing so, he consciously separates himself from most of skateboarding photography.
