The Urban Artist ist eine reisende Kunst-Ausstellung, die eine Auswahl der progressivsten Positionen in der europäischen und US-amerikanischen Urban Art versammelt. Die Ausstellung wurde Anfang 2011 im Soho House Berlin von ca. 20.000 Besuchern gesehen. Nun freut sich das Team von „The Urban Artist“ nach Hamburg zu kommen. Seit der Jahrtausendwende kristallisiert sich weltweit ein neuer Künstlertypus: Der Urban Art Künstler. Als Designer für Plattencover von progressiven Punk, Electro oder Hip Hop Gruppen, als Innovator im Graffiti Writing, als Avantgarde Modedesigner oder als Street Art Aktivist ist er kreativer Vordenker und künstlerischer Leader von subkulturellen Ausdrucksformen. Einzelne Akteure dieser kreativen Disziplinen haben die Grenzen der angewandten Kunst durchbrochen und zur bildenden Kunst gefunden. Heute ist der Urban Art Künstler nicht mehr aus der Welt der zeitgenössischen Kunst wegzudenken. Neben alternativen Präsentationsformen wie z.B. an den Wänden unserer Metropolen werden inzwischen hochqualitative Werke in Galerien und Museen gezeigt.
Ein Teil der Urban Art Künstler hat die künstlerische Auseinandersetzung im akademischen Kontext vertieft, andere feiern internationale Erfolge als Autodidakten. Was die Akteure der globalen Urban Art Szene aber tatsächlich verbindet, ist eine gemeinsame Haltung, die die Kunstakademien so nicht vermitteln können: Sie sprühen vor Innovationswillen und Radikalität - ihre differenzierenden künstlerischen Konzepte, Ästhetiken und Techniken können ausschließlich im Geist subkultureller Ambition und Tradition entstehen. Am deutlichsten wird die typische Haltung der Urban Art bei Künstlern, die das zumeist illegale Medium Strasse nutzen. Auch hier geht es darum, die Reibung des wahren Lebens zu erspüren, um diese schließlich in die Kunst zu übersetzen.
The Urban Artist dokumentiert, wo die Urban Art heute steht. Es ist eine Ausstellung, die diese noch junge Kunstbewegung näher bringen will und den Dialog mit der Öffentlichkeit sucht. Eine Podiumsdiskussion innerhalb der Ausstellung in Berlin hat die Definition der Urban Art und ihre Entwicklungspotentiale für die Zukunft beleuchtet. Es sprachen Dr. Ilaria Hoppe vom Institut für Kunst- und Bildgeschichte an der Humboldt Universität Berlin, der Graffiti Writer und Künstler Christian Awe sowie der Kurator der Ausstellung Johann Haehling von Lanzenauer. Moderiert wurde das Podium von Jan Kage, der die Kunst Magazin Sammlergespräche leitet und die Sendung Radio Arty auf Motor FM Berlin moderiert. The Urban Artist is a travelling exhibition presenting a selection of progressive urban art from all over Europe and the US, exhibited in St. Pauli/ Hamburg from June, 9th-14th, 2011. Since the turn of the millennium a new type of artist, the Urban Artist, has emerged. He has influenced the cultural scene as a creative thinker and leader of subcultural expressions taking on the role of album cover designer for progressive punk, electro or hip-hop bands, graffiti writing innovator, avant-garde fashion designer, or street art activist. Today these same urban artists have become indispensable to the world of contemporary art, as many more make the transition from applied arts to the field of fine art. In addition to the alternative forms of presentations such as that of city streets, they produce art works for galleries and museums who are increasingly putting together shows of urban inspired pieces.
Some urban artists have engaged with ideas in an academic context, while others celebrate international success as self-taught practitioners. What these artists have in common, however, is the prevalence of an attitude absent in the academies. They are brimming with innovative spirit and radicalism - employing differentiating concepts, aesthetics and techniques that can only be incurred by the exposure to a subcultural tradition. The most immediately obvious departure from a more classical practice is the illegal use of the streets as medium, mediator, and translator; providing the friction necessary to transform life experience into art.
The Urban Artist documents where Urban Art is heading today. As an exhibition the goal is to inform about this new movement by seeking for a dialogue with a public audience. The panel discussion related to the exhibition in Berlin highlighted a definition of Urban Art, its development and potential of progress for the future. It was led by Dr. Ilaria Hoppe (institute of art history at Humboldt Universität Berlin), the graffiti writer and artist Christian Awe and the curator of the exhibition Johann Haehling von Lanzenauer.
